   Résumé
   Épuisés par le travail à la chaîne et agacés par un syndicalisme inefficace, Zeke, Jerry et Smokey volent la caisse du syndicat. Comme elle recèle des documents compromettants pour les permanents, ils les font chanter. Puis Zeke se laisse séduire et accepte une prébende ; Smokey est assassiné ; brouillé avec Zeke, Jerry collabore avec la police.
   Commentaire
   Grand prix du public au Festival de Paris (1978), le film donne, grâce à l'invention soutenue du détail, une description âpre de la vie ouvrière. Le pouvoir établi et le syndicat forment un piège à deux mâchoires qui écrase les héros et annihile leur raison de vivre, l'amitié.
